On June 25, NT graduate student Anastasia Markina won second place in the first Annual Josa Iturbi International Music Competition. The competition was held at the University of California at Los Angeles, and Markina walked away with $25,000 in cash. Members of the NT administration, the journalism faculty and the radio, television and film faculty are in talks to potentially merge both departments into a new academic entity on campus. Denton native Caleb O'Rear became the new CEO of Denton Regional Medical Center July 25,. O'Rear, who has worked for Denton Regional for the past 10 years, replaced Bob Haley, who resigned in April. Derrick Morgan has been selected to take the reins on as executive director of NT's alumni association, the North Texas Exes, effective Aug. 20. NT has announced its 2007 Athletic Hall of Fame Class. The new plaques that will adorn the Super Pit this coming fall include four of NT's greatest athletes: the school's all-time leading women's basketball scorer, one of the best women's soccer players who helped build the program, the best women's point guard in school history and a former men's basketball player from the late '40's. The Mayborn Graduate Institute of Journalism held its third annual Literary Nonfiction Writers Conference of the Southwest July 27-29. All forms of literary nonfiction were discussed to an audience of journalists, writers, educators and students.
