    Student files suit against Lambda Chi Alpha

    Bradley Swearingen filed a lawsuit against Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity Jan. 22 for more than $300,000 for injuries he received during a pledge meeting, according to the student's attorney. Cass Keramidas, Swearingen's attorney at law, said in February 2006 Swearingen was sliding on the floor of Lambda Chi's fraternity house through a set of double doors when he hit his head and injured his neck.     The warehouse on 217 Hickory St. that houses the Sons of Thunder homeless shelter and motorcycle ministry is nearly bare, with only books, clothing and a few couches remaining.     At Tuesday evening's City Council meeting, council members unanimously passed an ordinance designating approximately 26.12 acres of land on McKinney Street as the site for development of a new campus apartment complex. The site, which is located on the south side of McKinney Street, east of Mack Park, is currently undeveloped but is designated as the new location of the Cypress Campus Apartments. (0) comments

    The first total lunar eclipse since Aug. 28 will take place Wednesday, and the astronomy faculty is ready to gaze at the moon.     Students in the online Principles of Nutrition class will soon no longer have to read the material. They will be able to listen to it in an audio book. It is an "alternative to having to read the text," said Priscilla Connors, an associate professor in the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management. (0) comments

    Becoming a member of the Student Government Association entails a little application and a lot of campaigning. To become a member of the SGA senate, president or vice president, all a candidate has to do is fill out an application, attend one of the two election code meetings and be in good standing with the university.     LAREDO (AP) - A Texas National Guardsman and another man have been sentenced to at least three years in federal prison for helping smuggle illegal immigrants through a Border Patrol checkpoint in South Texas. Clarence Hodge Jr., 36, of Fort Worth, a sergeant in the National Guard, and Jerry Zuniga, 29, of Laredo, pleaded guilty in August to charges of conspiracy to transport illegal immigrants.
