It's the sound of whooping cough, which Dallas-Fort Worth area residents are being urged to be vaccinated for because of an increase in cases during 2008. The disease, also known as pertussis, is a contagious disease caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis, and can be spread by coughing and sneezing while in close contact with others, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
