A new organization in Denton has emerged with what its founder, Adele Hull, says is a mission of peace, love, and unity for the city. Yesterday evening, about 30 NT students and Denton residents met at the corner of Hickory and Fry streets to march for the group, known as (R)evolution. (3) comments
Grammy Award-winning Stanley Clarke plucks, strums and claws his bass guitar during a solo Friday night at the Denton Arts and Jazz Festival. At least 200,000 people arrive at Quakertown Park each year for the weekend-long music fest and this year event organizers saw massive crowds of families and friends chomping on turkey legs and tapping their feet to more than a hundred bands across five stages, culminating in a performance from Denton band Brave Combo. Arson, corporate ownership and city regulations contribute to what former Voyager's Dream owner Mike Sutton calls "the vanishing of Fry Street." Sutton said the grassy, fenced-off area bears little resemblance to the variety of businesses that inhabited the space two years ago. But many new students have no memory of the old Fry Street and some wish the vacant lot could be replaced with something useful, like a grocery store. "This is my community," said Tommy Simmons, a communications design senior. "And I would like something that would make my life easier." (41) comments

The methodical booming coming from room 734B thunderously rattles the framework of Kerr Hall's seventh floor. This typical occurrence is the sound of Bryson "Big B" Price carving another notch into his beat-making belt. Price, a kinesiology junior, started making his musical patterns in 2005 after a friend introduced him to the process, and he hasn't stopped since. (2) comments
AUSTIN -Standing on stage with a wall of towering amplified subwoofers to my back, something wonderful happened. Bun B, who with his close friend and partner Pimp C pioneered southern hip-hop under the UGK moniker, took his hat off. The familiar bass line and soothing Isley Brothers vocals from the classic, emotionally stirring "One Day" pounded out from the speakers, and Bun was off, showing a crowd, hanging on his every word, respect for his deceased partner in crime that he felt came with the Texan terrain. Tenor saxophonist Ashley Hamer doesn't mind a man holding the door open for her, but when it comes to jazz, she doesn't want to be thought of as the girl in a group. Hamer, a jazz studies graduate student, plays in the Five O'Clock Lab Band and repertory ensemble, both of which are marginally dominated by men. (0) comments
