    Students can now apply for parking permits online, making the application process quick and easy for both students and the administration. "Electronically you can go online any time, on any computer with internet access in the world and, with the analogy I use, you can do it in your underwear at 3 o'clock on Easter Sunday," said Scott Kangas, the associate director for parking services.     Sotomayor nomination strikes a chord with Denton residents, UNT students

    The Senate Judiciary Committee delayed their verdict on the appointment of nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court last week. However, UNT faculty and students do not need another week; they have already made up their minds on how they view Sotomayor's historic nomination. (4) comments

    Students can still purchase a cap and gown for this weekend's graduation ceremony, but faculty members who decide to attend at the last minute might be out of luck.. "There are a lot of students who are just deciding whether they are going to walk or not walk," said Shawn Bourdo, the UNT Bookstore's assistant manager. (0) comments

    Thanks to a new program that was legalized by President Obama in June, Americans may now have even more reason to get rid of an old clunker or gas- guzzling vehicle. The "Cash for Clunkers" bill, officially titled the "Car Allowance Rebate System,", ensures that certain vehicles that qualify can be traded into a dealership for a more fuel efficient car with up to $3,500-$4,500 off the sales price.     At least 35 members of Alexius Buckner's family will come from as far as New York and Alabama to attend her 9 a.m. graduation Saturday in the Coliseum. Buckner is graduating with a bachelor's in Criminal Justice and will participate in one of five ceremonies held on campus during the weekend. (0) comments

    The words "college" and "free" aren't often found in the same sentence, but for many Saudi Arabian students, these two words go hand-in-hand. About four years ago, President George W. Bush and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia developed a scholarship to send over 3,000 Saudi Arabian students to college in the United States, said Aleka Myre, the director of the Sponsored and Special Programs Center at UNT.     In a meeting this month with UNT President Gretchen Bataille, members of a student free speech advocacy group were promised an advanced look at a proposed new UNT free speech policy soon after it is hammered out. The agreement came after an hour-long presentation of demands on July 22 to Bataille by five students representing the UNT chapters of Students for a Democratic Society and the International Socialist Organization.     Karina Manlove relates through the shaky static on her cell phone the day at UNT's freshman orientation where she and Lorena Sandoval first met. "We didn't know anybody and I talked to her from across the table and found out we had the same interests in music," she said. (5) comments

    Fry Street's Voyager's Dream may have closed down shop, but owner Mike Sutton has something else to offer students and residents: coffee. Big Mike's Coffeehouse has been in the works since January, with construction beginning in February in the same building. (1) comment

    Retired pilot and UNT alumnus remembers days at UNT

    Many students have a 5- or 10-year plan, but what are the golden years like for UNT alumni? Billy Kellum, a 72-year-old retired pilot, often meets friends at McDonalds for an early morning, 38-cent cup of coffee. He goes to an exercise class at Seniors in Motion and often attends Bible class - a different life from the book-filled one he once led as a student of industrial arts in education. (0) comments

    Locals offer something fresh

    Shoppers crowd around the large tents and tables of produce at the Denton Farmers Market, picking up tomatoes and putting them back in search of the perfect one to take home for dinner. The parking lot at the corner of Carroll Boulevard and Mulberry Street stays packed on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings for the market. (2) comments

    This is a story of numbers and the quest of one Native American tribe. The Piro-Manso-Tiwa Indian Tribe, Pueblo of San Juan de Guadalupe of Las Cruses, N.M., has been seeking federal recognition from the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs for almost 40 years, but with the help of Lee Ann Allen, a UNT anthropology student, the American Indian tribe is one step closer to receiving recognition.     Graduate student Aaron David Wuensch, 25, died on Tuesday June 9th at Denton Presbyterian Hospital after suffering from cardiac arrest while working out at the Pohl Recreation Center. Staff at the recreation center, who are first aid and CPR certified, responded to Wuensch immediately. (0) comments

    The Student Government Association kicked off the summer with its first Student Senate meeting yesterday in the Administration building board room at 2pm. Funded mainly by student service fees, SGA individuals are elected by the student body to provide a connection between students and administrators. (1) comment

    A Landmark for UNT The passing of a bill in the state legislature on May 31st gave UNT administrators permission to begin planning for the university's first law school. Dallas City officials and UNT administrators have already begun to draft plans for the UNT at Dallas College of Law, which is expected to open its doors to prospective students in the fall of 2011.     Brad Chism's warehouse looks like someone blew up R2D2 and a hundred of his friends. The UNT alumnus is the founder of the 3-year-old, Denton-based Computer Crushers, a company that recycles computers and electronics, physically destroying hard drives to ensure data security. (1) comment

    The University Union is typically a busy, bustling place. When the Meditation Club meets at 4 p.m. each Tuesday in room 114 to meditate, it's a different story. The club's meetings are open to anyone looking for a way to relax and "center." The mediation program focuses on breathing, the connection between mind and body, and walking meditation. (1) comment

    Not meeting with an academic advisor regularly can seriously affect the length of time an undergraduate spends at UNT. Between 20 and 30 students of the nearly 1,000 who apply to graduate each semester are turned down by the College of Arts and Sciences because they had have hours that don't apply to their degree, Mike McKay, assistant dean for undergraduate curriculum said.     Many students find it a challenge to juggle classes, labs, work and extra-curricular activities, but for students with children, that is just the tip of the iceberg. A challenge Travis Patterson, political science junior and father of three, cited was potty training. (5) comments

    The Garden of Honor, dedicated today at UNT's Discovery Park, is similar to the Trans-Siberian Railroad for one engineer. "I believe, like the head engineer of the Trans-Siberian Railroad did, that the most important thing is that it exists," said Mitty Plummer, nuclear engineering coordinator and engineering technology professor.     Working with children who are uninterested in math or science may be one of the most difficult aspects of a teacher's job but for Andreea Popa, it was just another day in class. Popa is a one of 120 students working with UNT's Teach North Texas program, an increase of more than twice the number in its inaugural semester last fall. (0) comments

    Taking a Toll: The new Lewisville Lake Toll Bridge could save commuters money and miles

    What could you do with a spare day and some extra cash in your pocket? Both are now possible for many UNT commuters with the opening of the Lewisville Lake Toll Bridge on Saturday. A student who drives to UNT twice a week from Dallas, Collin or east Denton counties might be able to save up to 27 hours and $85 in gas over the course of a semester by using the bridge.     An hour away from Denton, the 7-ton arms of 30-story giants are taking Denton and UNT's Mean Green to "clean green." About 30 Denton officials and UNT faculty members donned hard hats and safety goggles for the first public tour of 75 wind turbines at the Wolf Ridge Wind Farm Thursday in Muenster, Texas, located more than 40 miles north of Denton. Placed at many different school districts, they learn from mentor teachers fundamentals of classroom management, teaching strategies, and ways to handle real classroom situations. (0) comments

    For its small building capacity, the city of Denton Animal Shelter has more dogs and cats than it can handle, but plans for a new animal shelter may change all that. The city of Denton Animal Shelter handles over 5,000 animals a year in a facility that is capable of holding a maximum of 114 animals at a time, said Bette Sherman, chairman of the Denton Animal Shelter Foundation Inc.
