National treasure tops holiday box office hits
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- National Treasure dug up more box-office loot over Thanksgiving weekend, taking in $32.2 million to remain the nation's top movie. The Incredibles followed with $23.6 million.
Tim Allen's holiday flick Christmas With the Kranks debuted at No. 3, taking in $21.6 million from Friday to Sunday. After debuting Wednesday, the movie grossed $30.8 million. Oliver Stone's epic Alexander, starring Colin Farrell as the conqueror of the ancient world, opened a weak sixth with $13.7 million from Friday to Sunday and $21.8 million since premiering Wednesday.
Costing a reported $150 million to make, "Alexander" was trashed by critics, who found it boring and stilted, except for its lavish battle scenes.
Alexander was hurt by its nearly three-hour running time, which limits the number of screenings theaters can squeeze in each day, and its R rating, which restricted the audience to those 17 and older unless accompanied by an adult.
Movie-goers also may have had their fill of epics of the ancient world this year. Alexander was preceded last spring by Brad Pitt's Troy, which grossed $133 million domestically but left audiences cold, and last summer's King Arthur, a commercial and critical dud. Troy and King Arthur performed well overseas, especially in Europe, and Alexander could follow that pattern.
