The Student Government Association took on campus beautification at its meeting Wednesday.

Chris Clack, Arlington senior and SGA speaker of the senate, led the meeting and presented seven bills and one resolution.

Bill F2005-10 was approved and stipulates that a ballot will be presented to students in 2006 asking if they would like to see their $5 per semester safety and beautification fee reduced to 75 cents a semester.

"I've got so much positive feedback from the library mall and other beautification projects," said David Hall, Richardson junior and SGA president.

Chris Brown, Fort Worth junior, said he thinks this fee shows the NT administration has not planned ahead.

"They need to decide what they really want to spend all of our fees on," Brown said.

The Five Year Strategic Plan for NT facilities, proposed Nov. 5, 2004, states that campus beautification projects also include construction of a green space and amphitheater next to the new stadium, closure of part of Avenue D, closure of Avenue C from Highland to Chestnut and renovation of the Chestnut mall.

The senate also voted to reinstate Meet Your Representative Day, to eliminate SGA senators who missed more than 3 senate meetings and to strike the line "so help me God" from the student senator oath.

Bill F2005-09, requiring the change of presidential term limits, was delayed until next semester.

Shana Gooch, San Antonio sophomore, said the Computing Center Help Desk is currently upgrading the Unix system that EagleMail runs on.

"I'm not really big on improving EagleMail," Brown said. "I think we need a new system instead. We have not had a lot of legislation this year, which I am disappointed by. I urge you to go out and find something wrong with the university, something that you want to change, because the only way we can change it is through legislation."

Brown was also voted in as the new SGA sergeant-at-arms during the session.

Samantha Weber, Houston senior and SGA vice president, reminded senators about another security walk on campus with a police officer because of Monday's aggravated robberies.

Weber said SGA members will lead a walk after sunset on November 15 at the University Union bus stop to find dark areas not covered by street or building lights.

"Last year we covered the campus from Welch Street to the Rec Center," Hall said.

This story is full of errors. So much so that things that happened in the meeting are presented in completely different lights.

First, despite what the sub-title says, we did not remove "So Help Me God" from the Oath of Office. (Continued…)
