NTTV is officially bilingual. Accion Máxima, which means "Maximum Action" in Spanish, premiered on Jan. 31, and is NTTV's first television program presented entirely in Spanish. The show focuses on entertainment and lifestyle in the Metroplex including restaurant reviews and promotions for Latino music shows and dances. Jokes and skits are interspersed throughout the show, similar to many variety shows aired in Latin America.
"The show has obviously brought attention to students and especially Hispanic students," said Daniel Diaz, Corpus Christi senior and the show's director and producer. "It's amazing, because when we started there were very few of us but now there are more than 20 production members," he said.
Diaz said he and other students came up with the idea because many RTVF majors do not want to break into an English-speaking television career.
"We were basically looking to motivate Hispanic students in the Denton area to come to school," said Nora Leaños, Chihuahua, Mexico senior.
Leaños said the show has received an "awesome" response, mainly due to the quality of the show's production.
"It's more like a real television show," she said.
Diaz said he and other RTVF students proposed the show in August last semester.
"First we had to ask [NTTV], and then they gave us the go-ahead and then we were allowed to film the show," he said.
The show currently runs at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday nights for 30 minutes, but Diaz said he is trying to get the show extended to one hour in length. He also said on "special occasions" the show will have reporters going to Austin, Houston and Corpus Christi.
Diaz and his co-workers have been calling universities across Texas to see if this is the first all Spanish language show on a university television station.
"So far it looks like [the show] is a first at any university in the state," Diaz said.
Diaz said suggestions and news about upcoming events are welcome and that students should call him at (361) 548-9061.
"I've been having a lot of fun working on the show and meeting new people," said Ana Zenteno, Mexico City, Mexico sophomore and a reporter for Accion Máxima. "I've heard a lot of comments about the shows; it's something new," she said.
Diaz said other RTVF students have also been submitting Spanish program pilots to NTTV to be created into shows, although it is too early to say what will be produced.
