The Mean Green swimming and diving team hosted Texas Christian University Wednesday night at the Pohl Recreation Center, suffering an 83-48 loss, but defeating Incarnate Word University 118-9.
"We were solid," said head coach Joe Dykstra. "The girls raced hard. We just have to continue in future seasons to learn how to race through adverse conditions; [and] learn how to go in close to your best times while we are training hard, not just when it feels good or when it's convenient."
Earlier in the season, NT traveled to Fort Worth to take on TCU and lost by a slim margin.
"In October we really surprised them," Dykstra said. "We have never been even close to them in a meet before and this time it was not a surprise. They knew what to expect from us and were gunning for us. They were ready for us today."
Next, the Mean Green will swim against a conference foe, the Univeristy of New Orleans. To prepare, Dykstra said the team is going to start cutting back on the heavy training load it is currently carrying.
Dykstra recognized the seniors in their last home event of their college careers.
"I was really excited going into this meet," said senior swimmer Gwen Rourke. "It was very special for me. Being the last time I would swim at NT, it was also very bittersweet."
According to an NT press release, Rourke swam the fourth-best time in school history with 2 minutes, 25.41 seconds and now holds the top five times for the 200-meter breaststroke.
This will be the third time the Mean Green swims against a Sun Belt Conference team. The first was against the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, where NT placed first and the second was against Florida International University, where it won 215-123. Approaching quickly for Dykstra and the team is the conference championship Feb. 15-17.
