With the recent opening of Chestnut Hall, the University Union has room to begin renovations.
The move of the Career Center and the Counseling and Testing Services to their new location provided much needed space to accommodate NT's growing population and the expansion of current programs in the Union, said Union Director Tom Rufer.
The Student Government Association will move from its location on the second level to the third level near the dean of students, Center for Student Right's and Responsibilities and Student Legal Service's office. Organizations will have the opportunity to add their input to utilize their new space, Rufer said.
"Moving into the new office will be a lot nicer," said SGA Director of Student Affairs, Trey Connolly. "It gives us our own place and the space will be a lot more inviting and friendly."
The Learning Center, located on the third level, will gain office space for full-time staff members, double the size of the resource library and add a room for workshops and programs, said Assistant Director Kent Marshall.
"Right now our center is congested," Marshall said. "We were in desperate need for office space."
The Learning Center eventually will save money previously spent on renting rooms for workshops. Currently, the center functions in one room accommodating only eight students, but with the addition of a new classroom-type facility, 30 students will be able to attend the new programs, Marshall said.
The Office of Disability Accommodations will have more testing areas and the dean of students will have more offices. The Multi-Cultural Center and the Women's Center will move to the second level of the Union, providing greater visibility to students and more traffic to those programs, Rufer said. The University Program Council will remain on the second level, but also will gain extra office space.
The Lyceum will undergo renovations, its first since 1993, from May 14 to June 21. The month-long refurbishing will include new seating, lighting, technology and general foundational improvements, Rufer said.
Once a complete infrastructure assessment of the Union has been made, more lounge space, study areas and e-mail stations can be considered for updating the facility. The original Union was built in 1964 with a wrap-around addition in 1976, but the facility only houses 17,000 students - about half the number of students we have today, Rufer said.
"The Union is a critical element on campus.," Rufer said. "We need to benchmark ourselves to universities comparable in size as a potential measure of facilities and services to be offering."
