Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science students will be race car drivers, gamblers and golfing superstars after prom.
That is, if they can pay the price.
TAMS's After Prom Committee is raising money to take its students to SpeedZone in Dallas after they dance the night away at the annual prom April 14 at the Gateway Center, said Richard Sinclair, dean of TAMS.
"We want them to have age-appropriate activities," Sinclair said. "This way they can come up here and have intellectual challenges, but they can have activities outside of the classroom that's more like high school."
The efforts include hawking Tex-Mex at Taco Cabana, delivering slushies and burgers at Sonic and setting up and taking down chairs at Fouts Field to raise the goal of $5,000, said Kaitlyn Schorr, San Antonio TAMS student and co-chair of the committee.
The total price tag for renting out SpeedZone from midnight to 6 a.m., chartering buses to and from Dallas, and supplying food and prizes for TAMS students is more than $15,000, Schorr said.
The $15,000 is paid by the committee's fundraising efforts, ticket sales and donations from local business and students' families, said Tammy Bassham, the committee's adviser.
"We work really hard for our ages," Schorr said. "It's a good way for us to relax and let go of some of our tension that's built up over the year."
The committee has raised 60 percent of its goal and is still going. The group was responsible for assembling and breaking down the chairs at Fouts Field for football season and sold programs at events among other activities, Bassham said.
The fundraising activities have taught the students how to have a business-oriented mind, she said.
Students learned the restaurant business during their carhop events for Sonic, which they have done once a month, Bassham said.
"They're tiring [events]," Schorr said. "But it's not too difficult."
The committee organized an event at Taco Cabana Thursday, Feb. 22, after having to cancel one of its Sonic carhops, Schorr said. The committee got 20 percent of the receipts stuffed in a plastic box from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The event raised $174, she said.
The committee hung balloons, signs and blue streamers all over the brightly colored Taco Cabana dining room. It also displayed a board with photos and statistics about the committee's fundraising progress.
Schorr and other TAMS students greeted and thanked customers as they entered or left with either full bellies or to go bags.
"We really appreciate the community support," Bassham said.
