Student employees were shown respect and gratitude from faculty and staff members at an appreciation party yesterday in the Silver Eagle Suite of the University Union as part of NT's Student Appreciation Week.
Students who showed outstanding performance, customer service and initiative at their jobs were each given a plaque and $100.
"Out of 49 nominees, only 10 were selected for awards," said Student Employee Specialist Shaun Stoehr. "The nominees are picked by their supervisors but the winners are chosen by an elected committee."
The committee is comprised of faculty and staff members who were appointed by the vice president of their area. The members included selected people from the departments of Academic Affairs, Human Resources, Athletics, Dining Services and Dean of Students. Those who came up for their awards were introduced with a brief description of their achievements and reasons for nomination.
Gilpatrick Hornsby, Lakewood sophomore, received the award for the first time and was also the only male to receive an appreciation award from the Career Center this semester.
"I was very thrilled when my boss first told me that she had nominated me," Hornsby said. "It's not everyday that you win an award for doing your job and just doing what needs to be done."
Hornsby's superior and the central housing supervisor, Cindy Stride, said she nominated Hornsby as the student with above and beyond work in the Housing Department.
"He's truly amazing," Stride said. "He does terrific work, not to mention the fact that he is the bridge between the National First Year Experience Program and the residence halls because he works with both and that is something that we are trying to incorporate in all of the dorms in the years to come."
Many friends, co-workers and family members came to support those who received the awards. The appreciation party was catered with cakes, hors d'oeuvres and drinks. Also, a live disc jockey was provided to give the award ceremony a "party feeling."
"Last semester we held an awards luncheon instead," Stoehr said. "This semester, we decided that more people would like the idea of an awards party."
The awards are given to outstanding student employees every semester and there are only 10 winners each time.
Dan Naegeli, director of the Career Center, was at the awards ceremony to wish congratulations to those who won.
"I think that every student employee deserves our gratitude," Naegeli said. "We have a wonderful group of students and we want to thank all of the employees for keeping our campus running."
There are about 3,800 jobs, including work-study jobs available to students on campus that are essential to the continuation of many departments and organizations, according to the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships Web site, essc.unt.edu/finaid/finaid_overview.htm.
"We would like to show our appreciation for the students who take the time to go above and beyond," Stoehr said. "We just wish that we could do more for them."
