Denton native Caleb O'Rear became the new CEO of Denton Regional Medical Center July 25,.
O'Rear, who has worked for Denton Regional for the past 10 years, replaced Bob Haley, who resigned in April.
After receiving his bachelor's degree in psychology in 1997 from the University of Texas, O'Rear decided he wanted to work in hospital administration. He had been working at St. David's in Austin while he was in college and he said he knew he wanted to continue to work in that kind of atmosphere.
"Being in a hospital is like a big city that is alive at all times," he said.
O'Rear was born and raised in Denton and went to high school in Denton as well. After attending UT, he said he had no aspirations to come back to Denton, but he noticed a position was open at Denton Regional Medical Center and decided to apply for it. He said the experience has been great.
"It's been really enjoyable to have grown up in this town and then come back and work here professionally," O'Rear said.
Though working full time and just out of college, O'Rear decided to continue his studies and get his masters degree in health care administration. He signed up for a three-year program through Trinity University in San Antonio. The program allowed for people to work and take courses at the same time.
"It is geared toward folks who are working full time," O'Rear said.
He said the program at Trinity requires students to spend a week on campus at the beginning and end of the semesters, and then do teleconferences and videoconferences on Saturdays in between. Other than the two weeks students spend on campus, they are only actually required to go to the campus one day a month as well.
O'Rear finally earned his master's degree in 2001 and has continued to work for Denton Regional. He began as the marketing director of the facility, and just before obtaining the CEO position, he was the chief operating officer
As the CEO of the hospital, O'Rear is in charge of the whole facility, including all the financial and operational aspects.
