Rain causes leaks, floods

There were 20 reports of leaking roofs and flooded basements Monday, according to the facilities maintenance office.
"We had some roof leaks [Monday], but the staff just put trash cans out to catch the water until we could get there," said Nora Mathis of the facilities maintenance department.
Problems continued with leaks in the Willis Library, where the basement began to flood, said Sharon Kirkpatrick of the facility maintenance department.
The Ken Bahnsen Gym also had leaks from the roof, stemming from problems with damage to the clamping rings around the roof drains, she said.
The damage was caused by over tightening of the clamps, which has caused the screws to pop out and the seals to be compromised, Kirkpatrick said.
The big surprise was the leaks in the brand new roof of the Business Administration Building, she said.
Water was coming through in four places. The clamps around the roof drains are suspected to be at fault, but the expansion and contraction of roof joints due to environmental factors may also be behind the leaks, Kirkpatrick said.
Kirkpatrick, who is known in her office as the "roof guru", said that an emergency purchase order is in place to have the CBS roofing company come out within the week to fix the issues at the library and gym, and hopefully, the money will be available by the end of the week to have the problems repaired on the Business Administration Building.
"We are concerned with every building and every student," Kirkpatrick said. "These problems all have been brought to our attention and we will get them fixed as soon as possible."
