Diana Schulz is busy.
As a graduate student, she juggles studying biomedical sciences at the NT Health Science Center in Fort Worth with her position as the NT system's newest student regent.
In her new position, Schulz represents students, the university system and the state. It is her responsibility to keep in touch with the Denton campus and attend Board of Regents meetings.
The position of student regent has no clear job description, Schulz said. Since December when Gov. Rick Perry chose her out of two final applicants, Schulz has learned what it takes to be student regent.
"Student regent is a very dynamic position," she said. "I have to maintain student, state and university interests. Mainly it's a lot of high-level administrative duties."
Because Schulz lives in Fort Worth, she must make a point of keeping in touch with the Denton campus. It is especially difficult to stay connected with the student body, she said.
Student Government Association President Josh Ness said he and Schulz are making changes this semester.
"This year we're working hard to keep in touch," Ness said. "As some of the top student leaders in the school, we feel it's important to stay consistent."
Ness said he is happy to have a student regent at the Health Science Center.
Just as Ness is Schulz's link to the students in Denton, Schulz is Ness' link to students at the Health Science Center.
"The biggest thing I can bring to students is that they're getting the quality education they're paying to get," Schulz said. "It's a tough job."
To uphold her duties as regent, Schulz must be aware of subjects that matter to board members. The board focuses on matters regarding tuition, buildings and land.
"Learning how to pose questions to very important people is intimidating," she said. "I don't have a vote but I do have a mouth to ask questions that administrators don't think of."
When she finishes graduate school, Schulz wants to enter the medical device industry. Although her studies come first, her post as student regent is still important to her.
"It's the greatest learning experience I've ever had," she said.
