The NT men's golf team just missed its ideal start to the season Tuesday at the Cobb/Ferrell Mean Green Classic at Lantana.
Led by senior Cole Howard, the Mean Green finished one stroke behind the University of Western Kentucky, taking second place. Howard followed up his opening-round score of 70 with a final-round score of 69 to put him in a three-way tie for first place with junior Justin Perry of Western Kentucky and junior Devin Carrey of the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.
"Its very valuable," Howard said of the playoff experience. "Now, when I'm in that situation again, I'll know how to finish it off."
The three-way tie was broken on a playoff that ended on the fourth extra hole with Howard finishing second. The team itself also finished in second place.
"It's always nice to see individuals for individual championships," said head coach Jim Bob Jackson.
NT had three players finish other than Howard in the top 24, including senior Anthony Broussard who finished in a tie for seventh. Junior Harris Graham and senior Austin Welch were the other top NT finishers with ties for 17th and 24th place respectively. Welch started off well with an opening round score of 70 but ended up with a disappointing 77 in the final round.
When asked what getting off to such a strong start meant to his team, Jackson said, "It's huge. We were hoping to pick up where we left off last year. I can't say enough good things about these guys."
On the women's side, the North Texas Women's Golf Classic proved to be a tough task for the host team this week.
Sophomore Maggie Noel shot an opening round of 76 on the first day with freshman Chandra Alexander and sophomore Jordan Rose following close behind at 77 each. Sophomore Janna Golden followed closely with a 78, while junior Halli Jo Richards put up the team high round of 82.
After a progressive first day that saw NT still very much in the hunt, all hope was blown away on the second day by the windy conditions at Robson Ranch. Richards wound up with another score of 82, while Rose improved by one stroke (76) to lead all NT golfers with a total of 153. The other three golfers had an average increase in score of over 7.5 strokes.
The NT women's team will continue its season Oct. 1-2 in Lawrence, KS at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational. The men's team will tee off Sept. 17-18 at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, KS.
