  • Former business dean dies

    Mary Shepherd Thibodeaux, former associate dean of the College of Business Administration, died Oct. 24. She was 62.
    Thibodeaux retired in December 2006 as the associate dean of the college where she also served as the interim dean from 2004 to 2005. She joined NT in 1976 as an assistant professor of the management faculty. In 1982, she became an associate professor and then a professor in 1995.
    Thibodeaux got her bachelor's degree from Grambling State University in Grambling, La., a master's degree from Eastern New Mexico University and a doctoral in organizational theory at NT.
    "She was kind, but firm," said Kami Haynes, Thibodeaux's niece. "Her death was a shock to all of us."
    A cause of death has not been confirmed yet, but Thibodeaux suffered from blood clots, Haynes said.
    In addition to working at NT, Thibodeaux was a member of the Denton Planning and Zoning Commission and sat on the board of directors the Denton Area Teachers Credit Union.
    "She was extremely fair-minded and thoughtful," said Desiree Robison, associate dean for undergraduate programs in the College of Business Administration. "She had so much integrity."
    Robison said Thibodeaux was instrumental in reorganizing the advising services at the college.
    "She was passionate about her work at NT," Haynes said. "NT was an extension of our family, basically."
    Thibodeaux's husband, Alton Thibodeaux, was also an employee of NT until he retired in 1992 after working for 20 years at the university.
    Mary Thibodeaux's funeral service will be at 11 a.m. today at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on N. Bonnie Brae Street.
    Robison said the office of academic advising in the college would be closed today from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    "She made such a great impact on the community that she will be very well missed," Haynes said.
