NT named Steven A. Hill director of institutional compliance, effective Dec. 3.
Hill said among his responsibilities is developing a compliance-wide program for the NT system. He will manage the compliance office, which reports to NT President Gretchen Bataille.
"The job entails putting together increase of awareness to make sure everybody has a compliance mindset," Hill said. "We're making sure people follow the rules and procedures."
Hill was recommended by a five-person committee and is currently a compliance coordinator at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio where he has worked since 2000. As director of compliance, Hill will make an annual salary of $70,000.
"I think it's great," Hill said. "I'm a perfect fit for that position, to put the programs in effect … there's a very little learning curve because I'm doing it right now."
Hill said he does not know what his initial projects will be but said among the top compliance issues at most universities are conflict of interest and time and effort spent on any given project or research compared to the amount budgeted.
"We have to make sure management has an effect and make sure we have the proper checks and balances in place so that we're covering all the bases," Hill said.
Hill takes over the post after the former director of compliance Paul Dvorak decided to step down and return to the faculty as a professor.
"Every member of the faculty though is involved in ensuring the compliance level of the campus," said Kelley Reese, NT spokeswoman. "From the faculty to staff, it's our responsibility to adhere to ethical codes and behave in accordance to legislation and state guidelines. We sign contracts over this."
Hill's role is to make sure every member of the university is not breaking any rules, Reese said. If someone is not following protocol then it is his job to report it to the correct people.
"We're in the business of preventing problems before they start," Hill said.
