Breaking News: Schools not closing
Issue date: 1/29/08 Section: NEWS
Though Interstate-35 and Highway 380 have been closed because of grass fires, NT will not be shutting down.
"The campus does remain open," said Kelley Reese, university spokesperson. "The police and the administrators are monitoring the development of the fires to make sure that our campus community members remain safe."
Fires at the intersections of East and West I-35 and I-35 and University Drive have closed roads that some students and faculty use to commute to NT. While NT officials said the fires have been contained, Reese said officers are staying up to date on potential spreading.
"We have university officers on fire watch at places including Mean Green Village, our surplus property, Bonnie Brae and Research Park," Reese said.
She also said NT administrators would continue to watch the situation and asses potential campus closings until the situation is officially contained.
"Any time the community's safety is threatened, then we would do whatever it is that we need to do to ensure that they remain safe," Reese said. "The administrators and police take it very seriously and are obligated to ensure that the safety of the campus is primary and that our people are not in danger."
