Tax season is around the corner, and students won't have to look hard for a quick and easy way to do their taxes.
The Student Money Management Center is coordinating the university's sponsorship of a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site in partnership with the United Way of Denton County and the Internal Revenue Service.
VITA will be on-campus in Chestnut Hall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 16 and April 5.
This is the first year United Way has partnered with NT to put this event together.
Center director Paul Goebel said having an on-campus site will be convenient for all students.
"I want to see all the appointment times occupied by students," he said.
VITA volunteer income tax assistants are all trained by the IRS. Goebel said volunteers will be able to give advice especially specific to students.
United Way will sponsor other VITA sites across Denton County, including one at the Denton North Branch Library and the Denton Senior Center. The Senior Center at 509 N. Bell Avenue will provide services in partnership with AARP. According to Pat Williams, a volunteer at the center, center volunteer services will be available every first Saturday of the month and Monday through Thursday excluding Wednesdays at designated times.
"We're excited about the event and we kick off on Saturday," said Jeff Gilber, director of the senior center. "It's not just seniors. We welcome people of all ages to advantage of the free services,"
Goebel said everyone should take advantage of the free services.
"Students should make sure to plan ahead and make sure to give yourself plenty of time to spare."
To take advantage of the free services, reservations will be required. If a student would like to schedule an appointment to meet with one of the tax preparation volunteers, please contact the center directly at (940) 369-7761 for more information on VITA. All reservations will be on a first-call/first-served basis. For more information please visit unitedwaydenton.org.
