The University Program Council presented the fierceness of fashion Wednesday night with its first ever Top Model contest.
Of the 93 students who auditioned for a spot in November, 16 aspiring models made the cut to strut their most sultry moves down the catwalk in the University Union's Silver Eagle Suite.
After the audience's votes were tallied, Hope Beel, a Texarkana freshman, and Erik Sherif Rabah, a Fort Worth junior, were named top models and received a $500 shopping spree and a photo shoot with Mosé - Models of Style Exposed - a special interest club on campus.
Three judges, Shilah Phillips, who was 2006's Miss Texas; Cynthia Rice, a marketing director and booking agent for DMG Model Management; and Jesus Cervantes, a lead choreographer for the Miss El Paso pageant, each looked for specific qualities in the models.
Phillips said she looks for someone with confidence and a striking look who knows how to "work the runway." Rice, on the other hand, focused on height and body proportion. She said the ideal female model is 5 feet 8 inches and wears a size four. Cervantes watched for "fierce" walks with good posture, pace and direction down the runway.
"Fierceness," he said, "Is a state of mind you can see shine though someone when they do a perfect walk."
Beel set the standard for the rest of the contestants when she wowed the judges with her first walk down the runway.
"You stand out and command attention," Rice said in her opening comments. "You've got the top votes on everything."
Beel is a member of Mosé and has done photo shoots with clothing companies Rainsuit and Kesler.
Rabah walked closer to the end but demanded as much attention as Beel.
"Out of all the guys, you have the most model look," Cervantes said.

Hope is an outstanding-young lady. She was a student in my class. I always thought she had a striking look, and I prayed that she would some day consider becoming a model. (Continued…)
