SGA addresses presidential election issues

Issue date: 3/27/08 Section: OPINION
The Student Government Association would like to respond to the editorial in yesterday's newspaper. We strongly stand behind the Election Board's decision. It is extremely important that we make known the issues that were considered in the Election Board's decision. The NT Daily published a letter written by the Election Board to the candidates in today's paper. It includes the claims made during the election followed by the board's decisions on each matter.
This SGA administration is fully committed to serving the student body to the best of our ability. Additionally the implication that all violations were 'minor' is inaccurate, and the sheer volume of complaints caused the Election Board to come to the conclusion that the election may have been adversely affected. We do not take campaign violations lightly, and we hope for the best in the future president and vice president of the student body. SGA will work hard to inform the student body of the revote to encourage voter turnout. We believe in honesty, fairness, ethics and a common goal of excellence at this great university.

If SGA doesn't "take campaign violations lightly," why are Kline/Finberg being allowed to run in the redo after being found guilty of THREE violations? And for that matter why are Holman/Vittrup being allowed? If these two campaigns (who both tout their SGA experience as key points in why they should be elected) can't follow the rules established by the body which they seek to govern, how can they be expected to follow through with anything they've already said they plan to do? These candidates have lost all credibility. (Continued…)
