The multicultural greek sorority Lambda Theta Alpha is hosting a charity fashion show for its national philanthropy Future Urban Teens United and Ready for Opportunity on April 21.
"Our chapter established this program in 2004 through Communities in School through Denton High School," said Monica Cruz, Lambda Theta Alpha president and San Antonio senior. "Every other Wednesday we mentor ladies ranging from sophomores to seniors. We have activities every meeting and talk about issues such as self-esteem, cultural pride, careers and majors."
According to Cruz, the group works to motivate the young women in showing them the option for Latino women to pursue a higher education.
However, the funding is not always available for the young women to attend college, and that is why Lambda Theta Alpha hosts the charity fashion show for F.U.T.U.R.O.
The money the sorority raises from the fashion show will go toward a scholarship offered to one or more members of F.U.T.U.R.O.
"We have five scenes for the show such as vintage, athletic, night out, business, Greek and formal scenes," Cruz said. "So we ask for different stores to sponsor different clothing styles."
The sorority has clothes donated from stores all over the Dallas-Fort Worth area, including stores on the Denton Square. Every year the sorority has the support from Afterdark Tuxedos for the men's formal wear and La Di Da, which offers ladies' night out apparel.
With the help of Eagle's Nest funding and fundraisers, the sorority is able to put on the fashion show and earn money for the college-bound Latino young women of the community.
In 2005 the sorority raised $3000 for the cause and last year raised $800.
Lambda Theta Alpha will continue to help send young women to college with the support the NT community at the fashion show at 7:30 p.m. April 21 in the Lyceum. Tickets are $5 at the door.
"I am very proud of the Lambda Theta Alpha sorority," said Mario Martinez president of the Multicultural Council and Harlingen senior.
Martinez has co-hosted the event in the past and plans to do so again this year.
"Their national program is very helpful to the community," she said. "This is their eighth annual fashion show, and they have helped out many children and families."
As for Cruz, she's looking forward to seeing the reaction of the F.U.T.U.R.O girls.
"I want them to feel that this is all for them and that there are other Latino supporters who want to go to college and support them," she said.
