Gov. Rick Perry has selected junior Meghan Vittrup to serve as the student regent on the UNT board of regents.
Governor's office spokeswoman Krista Piferrer said the governor is excited about what Vittrup brings to the board.
"Megan is an ambitious young lady who has shown leadership academically and is able to positively balance herself as a student and a professional."
According the UNT website although the student regent does not hold voting power, the regent will work with board to discuss and review university policy.
Vittrup said she was shocked when she was notified of her appointment.
"I'm excited and eager to get started," she said, "I really want to make sure the student body is being heard."
During the spring semester Vittrup ran for vice president of the student government association, but was unsuccessful in securing the position.
"Although I wasn't elected, as the student regent I will be able to represent not just the Denton campus, but the UNT system as a whole."
