Boiler Room offers new ambiance

The Boiler Room, one of Denton's newest clubs and underground bar on the Square, feels like two different venues crammed into one large room.
Located at the corner of Walnut and Locust streets under the Abbey Inn Restaurant and Pub, it gives off the traditional bar vibe while also coming across as a concert venue.
At one end of the room, three pool tables, two dartboards, two foosball tables and video poker machines cater to those coming to hang out and drink. At the other end, tables and chairs circle the stage for those who want to listen to the bands.
Since it opened last November, owners have found a balance between the two. Music and football posters line the walls advertising upcoming shows and Sunday drink specials. Four 41-inch LCD televisions hang over the bar and around the room, and on Sundays when no bands are on stage, a 15-foot screen broadcasts football games.
"It's got a good vibe because of the Abbey Inn above it," musician Vince Lujan said. "People really like that basement feel."
Guitarist Eric Keyes played at the Boiler Room for the first time to record a concert DVD. He said the primary motive for recording there was the stage setup. He said the set up of the stage made it easier for the cameramen to get around.
"I think it's great," Keyes said. "I tend to be drawn to places where there's a sense of community, and I get that from there."
Bartender Warren MacLaine said the club's rectangular shape made it different from the other square-shaped bars in Denton that are square.
"It's not your typical 'come and sit down' bar," owner Jeremy Brand said. "The main draw is Thursday through Saturday because of the music."
Age limit varies from 18 to 21, depending on the concert, Brand said.
Brand said the purpose of the club is to get people in Denton excited about music again, but he hopes the atmosphere and friendly staff will draw people back.
"I think we have a lot of regular customers," Brand said. "It's a different type of place than Hooligan's and The Loophole."
