Construction workers began drilling reinforced steel and concrete piers Monday for the foundation of the Life Sciences Complex, which is slated for completion in May 2010.

William "Bull" Wood, the general superintendent of Byrne contractors, said that the foundation will be set by the end of this week and construction plans are ahead of schedule.

"After this, we are going to start on the underground work, which will be setting up the electrical lines and plumbing," he said. "That will take about a couple of weeks."

Juan Mireles, the superintendent contractor for Byrne, said 26 men are working on the project.

Wood said that students should walk on the sidewalk instead of on West Sycamore Street, which runs parallel to the company's storage units and the site.

"We're afraid somebody is going to get hurt if they're walking in the street while we have trucks backing up and down," he said. "Also, we don't want people parking on the street because we have a time frame on the concrete trucks, and we can't wait there."

Wood added that university policy mandates that cars cannot park on West Sycamore Street throughout the remainder of the construction period.
