Graduation cap and gowns still available for students

Students can still purchase a cap and gown for this weekend's graduation ceremony, but faculty members who decide to attend at the last minute might be out of luck..
"There are a lot of students who are just deciding whether they are going to walk or not walk," said Shawn Bourdo, the UNT Bookstore's assistant manager. "Luckily we still have everything in stock for them."
Undergraduates can purchase a cap, gown and tassle for $27.95, while master's and doctoral students pay $55.95 for a cap, gown, tassle and hood.
Providing apparel for faculty members is more difficult, since the color of each person's hood varies based on their area of study and the university that they graduated from. Faculty members could rent their outfits free of charge until about four weeks ago. After that, they had to pay a $10 fee, and as of about a week ago, it was too late to order, said Rodney Davison, the UNT Bookstore's manager.
"If faculty decide late, they end up wearing something similar to what the students have," Bourdo said.
Dr. Jeffrey Sager, chairman of the Department of Marketing, will attend graduation wearing a hood of maroon, white and dark blue. Maroon and white are the colors of his alma mater, Texas A&M University, and the dark blue signifies a business degree, Sager said.
A regular attendee of graduation, Sager enjoys that UNT's ceremonies are often less formal than the regalia implies. He remembers watching one student turn a cartwheel as he crossed the stage and another whose service dog took her diploma. Last spring, during the Swine Flu scare, Sager watched as graduates were given a green and white flower instead of a handshake.
"Some florist was really lucky," he said, laughing.
Having ordered his regalia on time, Sager can look forward to witnessing any oddity that may occur at this summer's ceremonies.
